If you're talking about the state of rap music in 2017, it's impossible to not bring up Lil Pump. You either love him or hate him, but he is indeed the "youngest one doing it". His lyrics are undisputedly bad and probably destructive to society as a whole, but he took 2017 by storm.
I can't lie, we listen to a lot of Lil Pump at thndr. Too much, in fact. Not because we relate to his lyrics, but because his producers are great and it's the kind of music you can listen to without investing too much of your attention.
We wanted to visualize his lyrics, so we set out by scraping several online lyric providers until we found one that wasn't blocking our requests outright (thank you, songmeanings.com, hit us up if you need help preventing others from doing this). Next, we cleaned the data, removed irrelevant words via NLTK and passed it through some of our favourite data visualization libraries. These are the top 100 key words used in Lil Pump's discography to date.
Pretty incredible. If you look closely, you'll see that the words "ooh", "bitch", "lil", "pump" and "yeah" make up just under 10% of his lyrical content. This is truly the golden era of music.
